WA High Range Drink Driving Heavy Vehicle
Heavy vehicles are a special class of vehicles that weigh 4.5 tonnes or more or have a length of 7 metres or more. These heavy vehicles may carry dangerous substances or goods and pose a risk to other road users. For this reason, drivers who are qualified to hold professional driver’s licenses to drive heavy vehicles are subject to a 0.0% blood alcohol limit.
If the driver is caught with an alcohol blood level that is higher than 0.0%, then depending upon the level of his BAC and whether or not this is his first or second or subsequent drink driving offense, the penalties will be graduated as the BAC increases. One peculiar feature of the heavy vehicle drink driving law in Western Australia is that this 0.0% BAC only applies for when the driver is driving professionally and is actually transporting goods or passengers. When the professional driver is driving his own car which is not a heavy vehicle, he will be subject to the general blood alcohol limit of 0.05% the same as every other driver holding a regular driver’s license.
