Immediate Driver's Licence Suspension
For first offenses of drink driving, the issuance of the traffic infringement notice will also commence the automatic license suspension. This license suspension is just a precautionary measure so that the driver suspected of drink driving will no longer be on the road or pose a risk to other road users. When he is convicted of this first offense, he will also be disqualified from driving for a period to be determined by the court.
If a person is convicted of a second or of a subsequent drink driving offense, again, driver’s license will be automatically suspended. This suspension is not a penalty but a precautionary measure to keep the drink driver off the road.
When the driver is charged and convicted with a high-range drink driving charge because his BAC is higher than 0.15%, the license will also be immediately suspended. The penalty is a fine, demerit points, disqualification from driving and cancellation of the license. After his period of disqualification has been terminated, the drink driver will have to reapply for a new license. He will be issued a Z license which means he must maintain a zero blood alcohol for the next three years.
