Alcohol Interlock Program SA

In South Australia, admission into the alcohol interlock scheme is for drink drivers who have been charged and convicted of serious drink driving offenses, and sentenced with disqualification. After serving half of the period of disqualification, the drink driver can apply for admission into the alcohol interlock scheme by applying for an alcohol interlock driver’s license.

After the alcohol interlock license has been issued, the device will be installed in a vehicle nominated by the drink driver. The nominated vehicle will be the only vehicle that the convicted drink driver may drive while enrolled in the alcohol interlock scheme. The device will require a breath sample which will be tested for blood alcohol concentration in order for the ignition to start. The device may also request a breath sample while the vehicle is in operation and the driver must stop within three minutes to give a breath sample. Any tampering with the device or the battery will be recorded as a violation. Every time that the device measures the driver’s BAC and it is beyond the prescribe limit, it will also be recorded as a violation.
